Hydroponics
Hydroponics is the cultivation of plants without soil in nutrient rich water solutions. There is much debate over if hydroponic grown crops are more robust and healthy than just very nutrient rich soil. Hydroponics systems are said to be able to give the plant nutrients when they need it at the correct amounts creating more productive crops. Many claim that moving the plants energy away from penetrating soil and stabilising themselves they put more energy into growth.
Even though it is clear that Hydroponics grows very robust plant material much new research on how fungi actively works in symbiosis with plant roots leaves questions on its future dependence. There are however some very big advantages to hydroponics in urban farming. The process is very clean, almost factory like and can be used to create large cropping in urban environments. Complete control can be applied to these urban food systems reducing impacts from weather fluctuations and pest damage.
Hydroponics takes most of the variables out of urban food production. The systems are clean and hygienic with various ways they can be implemented into modern urban farming. Hydroponics can be manipulated to green buildings including roof tops and office environments as well as producing food in the city.
