Hi! from Paulo the Urban Farmer, Welcome to my Urban Farming site.
I have always lived in the suburbs of London and possessed a spiritual pull towards the soil. Ever since I could walk I had an obsession with experimenting with plants and the various environments in which they grow. With Greek Cypriot heritage I have strong memories of my uncles farm in Pomas in north west Cyprus. I love the old village life ideals with family bonds strengthened by team efforts working close to the land. I believe a life of close participation with nature allowing a sustainable cycle of energy through self sufficiency creates a spiritual utopia which is lacking in many urban dwellers lives today.
One of my biggest influences in my life and main catalyst for my love of gardening was my grandfather Harry. He had grown up in the slums of East London during the 20's and 30's and learnt early on to be resourceful and self sufficient. After courageous service to Britain during the second world war he settled back to the East End where he turned his garden and all his neighbours in to an urban farm. Times were still hard after the war and Harry grew many fruit and vegetables as well as raising chickens and rabbits, urban farming to feed his family. One of his jobs as a grain truck driver enabled him to supplement his livestock, not only did he produce enough food to eat he managed to make money at the local market selling his urban farm produce.
So it seems farming is in my blood, I have always had either a garden or allotment so I also have a lot of experience. Guess what, I am still learning! and have continued to learn with new passions evolving from gardening to greater concepts of permaculture, landscape architecture, ecology, eco therapy and urban farming.
It has been my decision to share what I have learnt and aim to learn from others via the great information revolution which is the internet. I live in a homestead in the Chiltern Hills North West London and I have created a small piece of urban farming paradise. I invite you in to share and enjoy in my experiences and to see what is truly possible on an urban farm.
I welcome you to share, comment and discuss the content of my blog posts, thank you for visiting the Urban Farmer.
